Abstract
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to establish a normative reference database of Digital X-ray Radiogrammetry BMD (DXR-BMD) for Korean men to be used on the population of normal adult Korean men.

Methods: A total of 147 normal Korean men between 20 and 79 years of age were enrolled. Among them 27 men were excluded due to underexposed radiographs, and the remaining 120 men were included and their radiographs were analyzed. Korean males between the age of 20 and 79 who were generally healthy and free from diseases which would impact on bone density and were able to understand and wanted to sign the Ethics Committee approved informed consent. The statistical analysis had the objective of establish normative reference values for DXR-BMD used in T-score and Z-score calculations. The modeling of the reference curves for DXR-BMD and DXR-MCI were done by applying the Power of the Mean model. Prior to regression analysis, a standard test for heteroscedasticity was performed. The reference level and the standard deviation for the T-score was calculated as the mean and standard deviation of DXR-BMD values obtained in young adult men from 20¢¦39 years of age.

Results: The reference curve was based on a regression of DXR-BMD versus age and age2 (second order polynomial). The T-score parameters were found to be 0.579¡¾0.045 g/cm2 based on young adult men (20 ¢¦39 years of age). A polynomial of the second degree of age was the best model to illustrate the relationship between DXR-MCI and age.

Conclusion: The reference level for estimating T-score and the corresponding standard deviation were found to be 0.579 g/cm2 and 0.045 g/cm2 respectively. In adult men over age 50, a decline in mean DXR-BMD with age was demonstrated.
